Ultrasound Otoscope Gives Doctors New Data in Seconds
The American Academy of Pediatrics issued strong new guidelines in 2013 for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of Acute Otitis Media. These guidelines focus on reducing the use of antibiotics and increasing scrutiny of accuracy in diagnosis, stating that antibiotics should only be prescribed when the diagnosis is unequivocal. Unfortunately, with current tools and techniques, diagnoses are rarely unequivocal. The guidelines are well-intentioned, but existing diagnostic tools don't help clinicians tell the difference between viral and bacterial infections, so it is difficult for them to effectively meet these guidelines.
Over 30 million cases of otitis media are diagnosed in the United States alone each year. Studies show that approximately 85% of acute otitis media (AOM) examinations result in an antibiotic prescription.
By understanding the significance of early detection and taking appropriate measures, parents and healthcare providers can ensure optimal hearing health for children and set them on a path of healthy growth and development.
